Siemens needed to install switchgear to convert electricity generated by this new 140-turbine offshore windfarm to 33kVA for transfer to the National Grid. It also required transformers to supply low-voltage power to various equipment on site.
Portastor robust, secure equipment housings offered a quality-assured solution to the project’s tight timescales. Portastor provided a full turnkey package, from design to installation, supplying three 11 x 3.2m buildings, each housing six switchgear panels, a transformer and an automatic voltage regulator. The buildings feature high-security extra-wide doors to accommodate the large equipment.
The galvanised steel substructures for each building were installed by Portastor on site. The buildings were supported 1.5 metres above ground level to allow incoming cables to be fed easily into them, with no need for time-consuming and costly excavations, and to protect the sensitive equipment from flooding.
Following the success of this project, Siemens contracted Portastor to provide similar equipment housings for its London Array Windfarm and Gwynt Y Mor Windfarm in Wales.
