Electricity distribution company Western Power Distribution (WPD) needed a way to provide emergency back-up power to local substations whenever power was lost or fell short of demand. A switchgear building suitable for rapid deployment at short notice was needed to ensure that WDP could meet its obligations to keep the lights on for homes and businesses in the region.
Portastor worked with WPD to develop a transportable, single module building fitted with legs, which could be delivered by road and sited quickly without the need for a crane. The building houses switchgear panels, batteries and chargers and can be hooked up to a generator to provide emergency or short-term power in a range of different situations.
The building concept was such a success that Southern and Scottish Electricity (SSE) have since ordered three of the units to help meets its own emergency and short-term power supply requirements.
