Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company was constructing one of the largest petrochemical refineries in the world in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. As part of the ‘Cracker’ project, Yokogawa Electric Corporation needed to supply instrumentation control and safety systems (ICSS) for the plant.
Portastor was chosen to supply the 18 process automation and control buildings required for the project. These were constructed to a standard design in three building sizes. Portastor worked closely with Yokogawa to devise a densely packed interior layout that enabled the buildings to accommodate up to 60 system and marshalling cabinets, along with redundant power supply, UPS and pressurised HVAC systems.
The extremely hot, dusty environment required the buildings to be pressurised, with air-lock doorways, to prevent fine rock flour from entering the buildings and damaging the sensitive equipment. With external temperatures in excess of 50°C, advanced HVAC systems were specified to provide optimum interior conditions.
The ICSS buildings were fitted with a deep floor void to enable power and control cabling to be run along multi-tiered cable channels, connecting the field (marshalling) and safety systems. They featured US-rated 60Hz electrical systems, fire and gas systems and fire-suppression systems
The buildings were designed to a generic blast resistance of up to 250mb and low building response criteria. All buildings were fully mechanically and electrically fitted out and tested at the Portastor manufacturing facility, under the supervision of Yokogawa, prior to delivery.
