Portastor is a well-established and trusted supplier to the utility power market. For more than 20 years we have been supplying durable, robust, high-quality electricity substations and associated control rooms to regional National Grid infrastructures, regional power suppliers and local distribution companies.
Well-equipped, integrated substations
The buildings we supply are typically single, stand-alone substations, fully equipped with switchgear and ancillary equipment such as batteries, chargers and SCADA panels. Our buildings accommodate voltage a range of voltage switchgear, typically up to 33kVA. We can provide singe buildings up to 30m by 6m.
Our experienced teams install all client-supplied equipment in controlled factory conditions away from the potentially hazardous substation site, before the fully fitted building is delivered to site. The customer's electrical engineers then make all necessary connections, with Portastor conducting site acceptance tests (SATs), and the building is ready to be energised.
Exceptional, repeatable building standards
An important capability for the power sector is our expertise in designing repeatable standard buildings, which can be mass produced to an agreed specification for major substation replacement programmes. We have the engineering knowledge to design buildings to meet standards set by equipment manufacturers or end users. Our manufacturing facility has the capacity to build, fit out and store large numbers of identical buildings ready for deployment worldwide.
Proven design capabilities
Crucially, we design all power sector buildings from scratch, working closely with the customer to understand their requirements and build bespoke buildings that meet specified performance and safety levels. We have the capability to design electrical systems to meet varied international, ANSI and IEC standards. Our complete one-stop shop service includes everything from initial consultation and design through manufacture to final installation and testing on site. This means our customers benefit from a packaged, single-source solution covering every aspect of equipment housing provision.
Tried and tested safety systems
Our substation buildings are designed with proven over-pressure devices that dissipate any explosions caused by over-current incidents within the building. Arc-venting systems are either ducted or free-to-air and have been independently tested at BRE Cardington.
Rigid design for heavy loads
Portastor buildings have reinforced, robust steel floors to cope with extremely heavy substation equipment. Floors are designed to give just 0.1% deflection, helping to maintain the integrity of essential connections and seals within the building during transportation and installation.
Systems deliver optimum performance
We also specify buildings with all necessary fire detection and suppression systems, as well as air conditioning and environmental control equipment to ensure that the optimum temperature is maintained prolonging battery life and ensuring optimum performance for all installed equipment.
